Ashleigh Barty won the 2021 Wimbledon title, one of the things he said was that he hoped his idol, Evonne Goolagong Cawley would feel proud of him.
Even in London this season, the world number 1 wore a shirt with a design inspired by the shirt the Australian tennis legend wore when he won his first Wimbledon title 50 last season. The world number 1 tennis player has also long dreamed of being able to emulate the achievements of his idol.
As it turned out, Goolagong Cawley was not only proud, but even more emotional than when he won the Grand Slam title 50 last season.

“Everyone reacted differently when they won Wimbledon for the first time. It didn’t affect me until some time after, because you kind of went numb. You’re so shocked, like Ash,” said Goolagong Cawley, who has won seven Grand Slam titles in his career, in a video released by Tennis Australia.
“We feel so happy. Now I see the other side. My family, how they react when they watch me win. They were jumping up and down, crying, screaming, just like what we’re doing right now.”
First seed Ashleigh Barty beat Czech Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 in the final to become the first Australian woman to win Wimbledon in women’s singles since Goolagong Cawley 41 last season.
“He definitely makes me feel proud,” added Goolagong Cawley of Barty looking likely to be his successor.
“Ash is like my little brother and a part of my family. We treat each other like that. It’s a miracle when you make your dreams come true. I’m sure it was a magical moment for him.”
“He made me proud from the first time I saw him. He was probably 13 years old and was at the Australian Open. We watched a full game where he showed all his abilities. He does slice, volley, and smash. All things in one game.” “My husband Roger and I both looked at each other and said he was going to be our country’s next champion. Look at him now.”
