Aston Villa vs Liverpool results: Score 3-3

Aston Villa successfully held Liverpool to a draw with a tight score of 3-3 in the match week 37 of the 2023/2024 Premier League which was held at Villa Park, Monday (13/5/2024).

Liverpool’s three goals each came from Emiliano Martinez’s own goal and the actions of Cody Gakpo and Jarell Quansah. Aston Villa put up fierce resistance thanks to a goal from Youri Tielemans and two goals from Jhon Duran.

Thanks to this result, Liverpool is still stuck in third place in the standings with 79 points. Meanwhile, Aston Villa is in fourth place with 68 points, increasing their chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

The match had only been running for two minutes, Liverpool had already managed to open up the lead. Harvey Elliott’s cross was intended to be secured by goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. However, the ball actually slipped into his own net.

Aston Villa was able to equalize the score at 1-1 through Tielemans’ goal 10 minutes later. His shot following Ollie Watkins’ bait failed to be blocked by Liverpool’s defense.

Liverpool took the lead again in the 23rd minute. Starting from a beautiful attack build up, Joe Gomez sent a cross which Gakpo completed into a goal. The visitors’ 2-1 lead lasted until halftime.

Just two minutes after returning from the dressing room, Liverpool moved further away through Quansah’s goal. A cross from Elliott’s free kick was successfully headed by Quansah to beat Martinez.

Aston Villa and Liverpool actually both scored additional goals. However, efforts from Watkins and Elliott were both disallowed by VAR because they were considered offside.

The hosts became even more motivated after Duran fired a hard shot which Alisson Becker couldn’t block in the 85th minute. Sure enough, three minutes later Duran scored again. The score is now tied at 3-3.

No additional goals were scored by either team in the remaining time. A 3-3 draw was the final result of this match.

Jhon Duran was chosen as the best player in the Aston Villa vs Liverpool duel.

The situation of trailing 1-3 made Unai Emery have to rack his brains entering the last 10 minutes of normal time. Emery also decided to bring on Duran to replace Nicolo Zaniolo, who incidentally also came on in the second half.

Emery’s decision proved to be the right one. Duran repaid the trust given by his coach by scoring two goals to bring his team to force a draw.

Duran’s two goals were created through an extraordinary process. After he fired a powerful shot for the first goal, Duran then cleverly deflected Moussa Diaby’s pass to beat Alisson Becker for the second goal.
