Barcelona and Bayern Munich Advanced to the Champions League Quarter-finals

Barcelona and Bayern Munich advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals after defeating their respective opponents in the second leg of the last 16, Sunday (9/8).

Playing at the Camp Nou Stadium, Barcelona won a 3-1 victory over Napoli. These results put the Blaugrana 4-2 on aggregate after previously drawing 1-1 at the first meeting in Naples.

Napoli was actually able to provide a threat at the beginning of the match through Dries Mertens’ action in the third minute. Unfortunately, Mertens’ volley still hit the post.

Barcelona slowly took control of the game and managed to break the deadlock with Clement Lenglet’s header following Ivan Rakitic’s cross.

Messi doubled Barcelona’s lead to 2-0 in the 23rd minute. The winner of the six Ballon d’Or first outwitted a number of Napoli players in the penalty box before tapping the round skin.

The Blaugrana had the upper hand after Luis Suarez gave the hosts a 3-0 lead in the 45th minute. Suarez’s goal was created with a penalty because Messi was violated by Kalidou Koulibaly.

Napoli reduced the position to 1-3 in the first half injury time through a penalty completed by Lorenzo Insigne.

Entering the second half I Partenopei tried to make a miracle by appearing more attacking but no goals were created. Barcelona also failed to take advantage of a number of opportunities until the game was over.

In a separate place, Munich also managed to secure a ticket for the quarter-finals after overtaking Chelsea 4-1. The victory at the Allianz Arena put Die Rotten ahead 7-1 on aggregate after winning 3-0 in London.

Barcelona and Munich complete the eight teams that qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals. The other six teams are Paris Saint Germain, Atalanta, RB Leipzig, Atletico Madrid, Manchester City and Lyon.

The following is a list of the top scores for the 2019/2020 Champions League after the round of 16 matches have been completed.

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski temporarily leads the top scorer list by packing 13 goals. The number of goals from the Polish striker is far from Lionel Messi, who has just scored four goals.

Two additional goals from Lewandowski were created when Munich destroyed Chelsea 4-1 in the second leg of the last 16 which was held at the Allianz Stadium, Munich, Sunday (9/8).

Lewandowski ran alone in the front position because most of his closest rivals could no longer add to his goal collection because the team he was defending had been left out.

Lewandowski’s closest competitor is Erling Haaland. Unfortunately, Borussia Dortmund have been eliminated and Haaland’s goal collection has stopped at 10 goals.

Meanwhile, the third and fourth positions are occupied by Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling, who scored six goals, respectively. Both contributed one goal when Manchester City beat Real Madrid 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

Below them are Serge Gnabry, Dries Mertens, and Harry Kane who both have six goals. Only Gnabry can still add to his goal purse because another team of players has been eliminated.

Champions League Top Scores List

13 goals: Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich)
10 goals: Erling Haaland (Borussi Dortmund)
