Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid won a court against UEFA regarding the European Super League (ESL) on Friday (30/7). UEFA is obliged to cancel all sanctions for the 12 founding clubs of the Super League.
Quoted from the AP, a court in Spain granted the demands of Barcelona, Juventus and Madrid regarding threats from UEFA regarding the establishment of the Super League.
In a joint statement, the three clubs that are still holding on to establish the Super League said UEFA were obliged to immediately lift the penalties for the 12 founding Super League clubs.
“FC Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid CF welcome today’s court decision requiring, immediately, UEFA to reverse the action taken against all the founding clubs of the European Super League,” the three clubs said in a statement.
“This includes stopping the disciplinary proceedings against the three clubs [Barcelona, Juventus, Madrid] and removing the penalties and restrictions imposed on the remaining nine founding clubs, and they can avoid UEFA’s disciplinary action,” the statement continued.
Previously, UEFA sentenced the 12 founding clubs of the Super League. UEFA ordered the nine clubs that had withdrawn to surrender 5 percent of club income from playing in European competitions.
The nine clubs were also fined a total of 15 million euros. UEFA then threatened to penalize the nine clubs 100 million euros each if they decided to rejoin the Super League.
Meanwhile, against Barcelona, Juventus and Madrid, UEFA gave severe penalties, including banning the three clubs from playing in European competitions forever.
The three clubs then did not remain silent on all the threats posed by UEFA. They then took the case to the European Union Court which was presented by the Spanish judge, Manuel Ruiz de Lara.
As a result, the three clubs won. Barcelona, Madrid and Juventus announced the results in court via their respective official websites with the same content.
“The Court supports the request made by the promoter of the Super League, rejects UEFA’s appeal, and reiterates its warning to UEFA that failure to comply with the decision will result in fines and potential criminal liability. The case will be assessed by the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, which will review UEFA’s monopoly position on football. European football,” the three clubs said in a statement.
Furthermore, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Juventus reiterated their disappointment with UEFA which is considered to have become a problem in modern football.
“We have a duty to address a very serious problem facing football: UEFA has established itself as the sole regulator, exclusive operator and unique owner of European football competition rights.
“This monopoly position, in a conflict of interest, undermines football and its competitive balance. As much evidence shows, financial controls are inadequate, and they have been improperly enforced. Clubs participating in European competitions have the right to organize their own competitions.”
Barcelona, Juventus, and Madrid themselves ensure the Super League project will continue.
