The incident occurred in the 68th minute, where Varga fell after collide with Angus Gunn and did not move on the field. Gunn and Varga were fighting for the ball after the free kick.
When he fell, Varga also appeared to land in an unideal position on his head. The Hungarian players appeared visibly distressed as they helped officials lift a blanket to protect Varga from the cameras.
The Ferencvarosi TC club striker was then stretchered off. The Hungarian Football Association has confirmed that Varga is in a stable condition but will likely undergo surgery.
“Several bones in Barnabas Varga’s face were broken as a result of a collision during the match, and he also suffered a concussion,” the Hungarian Football Association said.
“The striker will most likely undergo surgery. He spent the night in hospital in Stuttgart,” the statement added.
Speaking after the match, Hungarian national team coach Marco Rossi said that at first he was not immediately aware of the collision incident between Gunn and Varga.
“When we saw the players calling the doctor and everything, I started to worry and everyone was very worried. I think when Barni (Varga) left the field, he was awake, he was fine,” said Marco Rossi.
“So it’s great, the player is healthy. Of course, he may not be available for the rest of the tournament if we continue, depending on the other players at the moment. But the most important thing is that he is healthy,” he said.
Hungary itself won 1-0 over Scotland in that match thanks to Kevin Csoboth’s goal in injury time, to be precise in the 90+10th minute.
Hungary finished third in Group A of Euro 2024 and are now waiting to see if their three points are enough to secure a place in the knockout stages, as one of the four best third-placed teams.
