Bayern Munich successfully defeated Dinamo Zagreb with a landslide score of 9-2 in the matchday 1 League Phase of the 2024/2025 Champions League held at the Allianz Arena, Tuesday (17/9/2024).
Harry Kane became the star of Bayern’s victory by scoring four goals, three of which were from penalties. Michael Olise scored two goals, and the other three goals were contributed by Raphael Guerreiro, Leroy Sane, and Leon Goretzka.
Dinamo Zagreb themselves had given fierce resistance at the start of the second half by scoring two goals, each through Bruno Petkovic and Takuya Ogiwara.
Thanks to this result, Bayern Munich is temporarily entitled to top the League Phase standings with a goal difference of +7. On the other hand, Dinamo Zagreb is slumped at the bottom of the standings.
Bayern had scored a goal in the 16th minute through Serge Gnabry’s action. However, this goal was disallowed by VAR for offside. Shortly after, Bayern got a penalty which Kane converted into a goal.
Bayern’s lead increased to 2-0 in the 33rd minute through Guerreiro’s beautiful goal. Five minutes later, Olise increased the score to 3-0 which lasted until halftime.
Entering the second half, Dinamo performed extraordinarily by scoring two goals in a row in just one minute, each through Petkovic’s action in the 49th minute and Ogiwara in the 50th minute.
However, that was the end of Dinamo’s resistance. Practically, after that the match absolutely belonged to Bayern. Starting with Kane’s goal in the 57th minute, Bayern went crazy for the rest of the match.
Olise scored his second goal in the 62nd minute before Kane again executed a penalty into a goal in the 73rd minute. Kane once again repeated the goal from the same scheme five minutes later.
Sane increased Bayern’s lead to 8-2 thanks to his goal in the 85th minute. Goretzka closed the goal party in the second minute of injury time. The final score of this match was 9-2.
In this match, Kane opened his goal tap through a penalty in the 19th minute. Then he added three more goals in the second half. One from open play (57′), and two more goals from penalties (73′, 78′).
Three penalty goals in one match apparently pushed Kane to set a new record. According to Opta records, Harry Kane is the first player to score a penalty hat-trick in European competition, including the Champions League.
He also became the first English player to score four goals in one UCL match in decades.
Kane seems to want to prove that he deserves to be Bayern’s main striker. He is still hunting for his first trophy at club level.
