The Bobbie Rosenfeld Award, has named teenager Bianca Andreescu as the 2019 Canadian Press female athlete of the year.

The 19-year-old tennis star started the season in the role of a promising young player eager to prove herself among the professionals. She ended the year as one of the headliners of the circuit.

She pinned a skewer of top players to her hunting board and found a way to shine at the most important moments and on the biggest tennis stages.

“When I step on the court, I know it’s very easy to say, but I try not to focus on who’s on the other side. I think that’s helped me achieve what I’ve achieved.” Andreescu said.

Andreescu’s first flare came in Indian Wells, California in March. A singles title at the Rogers Cup – the first for a Canadian in 50 years – came to fruition in August, a few weeks before her historic performance at the United States Open.

In a unique moment in the history of Canadian sport compared to Mike Weir’s Masters Tournament victory and Sidney Crosby’s golden goal, Andreescu defeated Serena Williams to become the first Canadian to win a singles title at a Grand Slam tournament.

“Bianca Andreescu is the only choice for Canada’s female athlete of the year. Hands down the most dominant performance of any athlete, male or female. This year, a star was born.” Globe and Mail sports editor Shawna Richer said.

Andreescu climbed the ranks at high speed to finish the year in 5th place. She started the year at No. 152. With his fighting style and attack tennis, Andreescu has a variety of shots that can be difficult to parry. She has the power to stand up to her opponents who bet on power, but can also use cut balls or cushioning to her advantage.

“I think now I’m at a stage where I can choose the right shot at the right time. That’s one challenge I think that I’ve faced this year is to choose the right tool in my toolbox at a certain time. But I think that’s improving and I think I can continue to storm the WTA Tour.” Andreescu said.
