Bianca Andreescu on Monday has seemed to have suffered a serious left ankle injury while playing in the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami.
The Canadian collapsed on the court during a rally and her left ankle seemed to take the brunt. In tears, writhing in pain, Andreescu let out several bloodcurdling screams.
Bianca spent several minutes lying on the ground, near the baseline, and the former world No. 4 could be heard screaming.
The 22-year-old then left to the applause of the crowd, taking her place in a wheelchair. She has a sympathetic hug from her rival, the Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Bianca looked set to make a comeback as she led 2-0 in the second set after losing the first set 7-6 in the tiebreaker.
The match between Bianca and Alexandrova on the Tribune court, the second in the Hard Rock Stadium, have started 40 minutes later than scheduled, before being delayed by rain for about two hours.
“I’m just really sorry that it happened to (Andreescu). Seeing her on the court in so much pain, it’s just painful to watch.” Alexandrova said.
“You cannot help, you just can do nothing, which is terrible. And I think she’s going to be fine soon, and I’m wishing for her speedy recovery.
“The first set was super tough and great, and it probably would have been a really good match for all of us. But unfortunately (the injury to Andreescu) happened.” she added.
Alexandrova was granted a win by default after Andreescu’s retirement. The Russian athlete is through to the quarterfinals of the Miami Open for the first time in her career.
Andreescu’s mother, Maria, meanwhile, was left in tears as she watched her daughter suffer the horrific injury.
In 2021 Bianca retired from the final in Miami after suffering a right ankle injury against Ashleigh Barty.
