Billy Joe Saunders dominates David Lamieux to retain his WBO title

Camille Estephan looked very worried as Eric Gomez of Golden promotion and Peter Nelson of HBO stepped out of David Lemieux’s locker room and prepared to leave Place Bell, Laval, Canada after the overwhelming defeat of Billy Joe Saunders.

Lamieux manager probably wanted to make sure his boxer did not sink into oblivion after this embarrassing defeat.

The limits of Lemieux have been exposed by Saunders. The Briton was able to avoid the powerful slugger, who was never able to deploy his weapons, comfortable as a fish in the water in this 20-by-20-foot ring. The left-handed jab allowed him to control the distance. Lemieux should have had arms six centimeters longer to reach Saunders.

Saunders bets big when he decides to leave Britain for the first time in his career by facing a boxer with a good reputation. He made the leap over the Atlantic, earlier than Joe Calzaghe after spending the last three weeks in Canada.

Saunders’s style suggest that Lemieux may have suffered the hardest defeat of his career, there was no shame in being knocked out by Gennady Golovkin. There was no shame in losing young Marco Rubio or Joachim Alcine, in fights were Lemieux had good times. But against Saunders, never Lemieux was in the game.

It will have been difficult to give Lemieux a single round. Canadian judge Beneoit Roussel perhaps was right, with a score of 120-108. Puerto Rico judge, Gerardo Martinez, meanwhile, has awarded Lemieux three rounds.

According to CompuBox, out of 356 shots thrown by Lemieux, only 67 have reached the target. On the other side, the WBO champion has reached the target 165 times.

After the fight, Lemieux invoked as shoulder injury that occurred during the fight. This injury, according to Marc Ramsay, had a definite impact on the outcome of the fight.

Ironically, it was also the most significant fight for a boxer here in the last year. Another irony, the same type of the fight smiled on Yves Ulysse. More elegant than Saunders, the Canadian was sensational against the dangerous Cletus Seldin, who was playing Lemieux. Ulyse has managed the feat of the evening ad erases the erroneous decision he was victim in October.
