Footballers were busy congratulating Cristiano Ronaldo for breaking 100 goals for the Portugal national team. Cristiano Ronaldo’s number of goals on the international stage reached to 101 after carving a brace against Sweden in the second matchday of the 2020-2021 UEFA Nations League, Tuesday (8/9/2020). The brace in the match resulted in Portugal’s 2-0 win.
CR7’s brilliant achievement then received appreciation from the legendary Real Madrid full-back, Roberto Carlos. “One hundred goals! More than extraordinary,” said the figure nicknamed the Bullet Man through a video uploaded to the FIFA World Cup Twitter. “A beautiful career, great player, and an extraordinary figure. Congratulations and enjoy this moment,” added Carlos.
Carlos is not the only football celebrity who has appreciated Ronaldo’s achievements. Deco, Nuno Gomes, Rio Ferdinand and Luis Nani also did the same.
In addtion, most of the football clubs also congratulated Ronaldo on their Twitter social media accounts. Interestingly, it was Real Madrid who was left behind from the row of clubs that congratulated him. Manchester United, who were defended by Ronaldo between 2003-2009, became the first club to offer congratulations. Followed later by Cristiano Ronaldo’s first club, Sporting CP. Juventus seem to be waiting until the Sweden-Portugal match is over to determine how many goals Ronaldo has scored to congratulate him.
Ronaldo is now getting closer to Ali Daei’s record as the all-time top scorer at international level. Ali Daei scored 109 goals during the Iran national team uniform. That means Ronaldo needs to score 8 more goals to match Daei’s achievements.
Portugal is scheduled to face 6 matches in the remainder of 2020 so that Ronaldo’s chances of reaching the Daei record this year are quite open. However, the opportunity is indeed tough because 4 of the 6 matches that Ronaldo and Portugal have to go through are of high caliber.
For the closest schedule, Portugal will face Spain in a trial match on 7 October. Four days later, the Seleccao will meet France in the UEFA Nations League Group 3 big match. On November 14 and 17, Portugal is scheduled to have another duel with France followed by Croatia in the UEFA Nations League.
There are 2 matches in the remainder of 2020 that may not be so tough that Ronaldo can maximize his opportunity to increase his goal collection. The two matches are against Sweden in the UEFA Nations League on 14 October and against Andorra on 11 November.
