Golden Boy Promotions president, Eric Gomez has confirmed that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs) is keen to fight Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (40-1-1, 35 KOs) for a third time later in 2021.
The Mexican icon Canelo won the middleweight title by the narrowest of margins on back in September 2018, taking a majority decision over Gennady Golovkin. He has multiple world titles in four different weight classes, including light heavyweight and knocked out Sergey Kovalev in the 11th round.
“We have had some discussions about doing the third fight with Golovkin which would be very exciting,” Gomez told Sky Sports.
“He is willing to entertain that third fight. Hopefully we can surprise everybody by getting that fight going next year. They both realize now that their events were very successful. For them, monetarily, it would be very beneficial to fight again.
“More than anything, the fans are very interested. Both fights were very close and exciting. They both realize that now. They are both open to the fight.” Gomez added.
The return of Mexico’s light heavyweight champion has been delayed by the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, but he plans to return to the ring in September or October.
“I think it will eventually happen. I see this fight happening. I’m just not sure when it will happen.” Golovkin said in October 2019.
“He is the one who keeps running away, who keeps running away from the fight. To be honest, all of the dirt that is connected to the team, I don’t even want to touch it.” Golovkin added.
Golovkin bounced back with a 4th round knockout of Steve Rolls in back in June 2019. The Kazakhstan icon then beat Sergiy Derevyanchenko by unanimous decision to reclaim the vacant IBF middleweight title at Madison Square Garden in October.
