Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has promised that he would send the American Caleb Plant to the canvas. It was difficult for him, but in the eleventh round he proved it.
The Mexican icon became the first undisputed four-belt super middleweight world champion in boxing history at MGM Grand Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday.
“I am very happy. It was more difficult than normal. I said it from the beginning that I was going to knock him out. I knew I was going to do it. We went step by step.” Canelo said.
Coach Eddy Reynoso called Canelo through the 11 rounds and gave him advice to send Plant to the canvas once and for all.
“He told me ‘be patient, fix it and it will fall.’ That’s what we did. I was getting a little desperate. I relax. That is why we are a team. This is how fights are won. We make a great dumbbell.” Canelo said.
Canelo wrote his name in gold letters, as he became the first Latin American to unify titles in any division.
“I want this to be a motivation, that there are many more champions. It is a great achievement for me, for my team and for my country.” Canelo said.
“I am very grateful to everyone who supported me. I promised them the knockout, it took me a little longer but there it is.” he added.
Canelo thanked each of the members of his team and said that he was very pleased that Jose ‘Chepo’ Reynoso was able to be present at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“Very glad you came to this fight. We have always been together. It is something very important to me.” Canelo said.
