Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz on Friday was fourth fastest respectively in the second free practice session for the Portuguese Grand Prix, which takes place on Sunday at the Algarve International Circuit in Portimao. The Spaniard insisted that the poor grip conditions on the Portuguese track suited him perfectly.
“Yeah, it was a very positive day for me. I’m continuing my learning curve, and the track conditions today were arguably the lowest grip of the season so far.” Sainz said.
“Bahrain and in particular Imola were very adherent; today it was really slippery. And that’s another experiment in the bag just to see how the Ferrari performs in very low grip conditions. I like the low grip conditions. It’s always something that I guess is in my nature and I like to get to find grip where there isn’t.” Sainz added.
Sainz has made a point of stressing that the pace of the Ferrari this Friday in free practice could not be sufficient this Saturday during the qualifications against its rivals.
The Spaniard added that he always enjoys driving in low grip conditions as he already proved to Imola in the race a few weeks ago when he had to take the start from eleventh place on the grid to finally finish fifth.
“But at the same time, you know, we saw in Imola, that on Friday we tend to be a little stronger than maybe Saturday or Sunday. Is it because of the fuel or the engine? I am not sure.” Sainz said.
“Then we see other teams take bigger steps forward on Saturday so I’m going to be careful and see how it goes tomorrow. So I’m keen to try out this type of weekend at Silverstone and Monza. Probably it won’t make a major change to the hierarchy, but it will be nice to see how it works out.” he added.
