Carolina Marin Returns and Makes European Championship History

Carolina Marin became the queen of European badminton. She got that status after winning the European Badminton Championships. In the final match of the tournament in Madrid, Spain, Saturday (30/5/2022) local time, the women’s singles mainstay of Spain defeated Kirsty Gilmour.

Marin, placed as the top seed, needed 42 minutes to win 21-10, 21-12 over the third seed from Scotland. This title is proof that Marin is competitive again. The Rio 2016 Olympic gold medalist has just recovered from an injury, which made her unable to defend his title at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Yes, this left-handed woman had to be absent from the world badminton event for 11 months. She has injured her ACL and meniscus. This 2022 European Badminton Championship title also made history for Marin. She became the first women’s singles in history to win the title six times in a row.

“It’s great to be able to compete again. I came back and tried to forget my injury,” said Marin. “I’m very excited now, not only for this win but for how I handled the injury. I want to start thinking about the game in Paris (Olympics 2024) and want to get on the podium in Paris.”

From the men’s singles sector, Viktor Axelsen who is the first seed, became the best in the 2022 European Badminton Championships. The Danish player who won the Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medal won 21-17, 21-15 over his compatriot, Anders Antonsen, who was placed as the third seed.

This is Axelsen’s third title on the European Championships stage. “European Champions. After that the Thomas Cup. Looking forward to it!” That’s how Axelsen uploaded through his social media, after winning the championship title. This means that Axelsen wants Denmark to win the 2022 Thomas Cup again, which will take place this May in Thailand.
