Casinos report refunds, with Gennady Golovkin-Canelo Alvarez draw

Las Vegas casinos have been put through the ringer over the last few days as they try to sort out the bets placed on the Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin fight.

Many have reported as much as six-figure losses for the fight ending in a draw, but even more have lamented all of the refunds they have had to do because so many people picked a fighter to win.

According to ESPN, people were lined up at casinos looking for refunds after the fight was declared a draw. Casinos have estimated that as much as $20 to $30 million was wagered on the fight, and a good portion had to be refunded to those who chose a winner.

However, the amount of money wagered on the fight paled in comparison to what the Conor McGregor-Floyd Mayweather fight did a few weeks ago. This fight only received a third of the bets that Mayweather-McGregor did, and many bookmakers found themselves fortunate in that instance.

“A lot of people got refunds,” Westgate SuperBook vice president Jay Kornegay said. “But thank God it wasn’t a Mayweather-McGregor draw. We’d be refunding for a week.”
