Repsol Honda rider, Jorge Lorenzo, tried to overtake Maverick Vinales at corner 10 in round two during the Catalunya MotoGP 2019 at the Catalunya Circuit on Sunday (06/16/2019). However, his action failed and caused a successive collision.
Maverick Vinales, Andrea Dovizioso and Valentino Rossi who were nearby were affected. The four were immediately eliminated from the race which still have 23 rounds left.
Entering the Catalunya 10 MotoGP corner, Jorge Lorenzo lost control of his motorbike. He then dropped Andrea Dovizioso, who had just lost his first position after being overtaken by Marc Marquez. Jorge Lorenzo’s motorbike then slid about Maverick Vinales and Valentino Rossi.
Valentino Rossi managed to continue the race. However, he had to stop because of damage to his bike.
Upon the incident, Lorenzo apologized. In fact, the driver nicknamed X-Fuera came to the Ducati garage and Yamaha to apologize directly to Dovizioso, Vinales and Rossi.
Dovizioso and Rossi claimed to have forgiven Lorenzo. The two Italian riders even wanted Lorenzo not to get a penalty.
However, Vinales reacted differently. He seemed still upset because of the incident that broke his dream to bring home points at home. “Even though Lorenzo is a great driver who has extraordinary talent, he can’t win the race in just two rounds,” said Vinales.
Vinales added that Lorenzo deserved to get a penalty because it prevented Dovizioso from winning the 2019 MotoGP title. “So today (Sunday, red) he destroyed Rossi and my race, also closed Dovizioso’s chances of gaining extra points for the standings,” Vinales said.
“I hope that the race director did the same to me yesterday.” Nonetheless, after reviewing the recording of the incident, the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel finally decided that it would not take further action against Lorenzo.
Despite failing to finish the race, Jorge Lorenzo said that he was satisfied with the settings on his bike during this 2019 Catalunya MotoGP weekend. “All the news is certain about the incident. However, apart from that, we made a lot of progress. Hopefully we can maintain this,” continued the three-time MotoGP world champion.
The Spaniard appeared to have not recovered properly from the operation he carried out on his left foot at the end of the 2018 season. Lorenzo also underwent two surgeries on his wrist at the end of 2018.
