Jaylen Brown’s future with the Boston Celtics is in doubt. The 26-year-old star will be a free agent at the end of next season. However, he still questions his presence in the team for the future.
It all started when the rumours about Kevin Durant moving to the Celtics last offseason. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, an initial proposal was turned down by Brooklyn.
Boston executives made Brown, Derrick White, and several draft selections available. But the fact that the information became public left the athlete in an uncomfortable situation.
Brown was left wondering if he was part of the future, so he doesn’t know if he’ll extend his contract with the Celtics.
In an interview with journalist Logan Murdock, from The Ringer, he did not guarantee that he will stay for the next few years.
“I don’t know, but as long as I’m needed. It’s not up to me. We’ll see how they feel about me, but also how I feel about the team when the time comes.” Brown said.
“I hope, however, that makes sense. But I’ll stay where they want me. I will stay where I will be needed and treated right.” Brown added.
Jayson Tatum and Durant’s friendship, however, made the player feel doubts about what his colleague wanted at the time.
“Kevin Durant and Jayson Tatum are friends. They were training together. So I wasn’t sure where the energy was. I wasn’t sure which direction the franchise was going.” Brown said.
But Brown doesn’t want to nail anything right now. Despite knowing that he will enter the last year of his contract, the player avoids premature conclusions.
“I like what we have now. If it fits your whole career, it fits your career. But if not, no. Some of the all-time greats didn’t end their careers with the same franchise.” Brown said.
“Michael Jordan, for example, retired with the Washington Wizards. As much as I like it here and enjoy being here, you see where life takes you. You see how the process goes.
“So whatever you do is what’s in front of you right now, to be honest.” he added.
