Paris Saint-Germain advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals. That was after PSG defeated Real Sociedad 2-1 to win 4-1 on aggregate.
PSG visited Sociedad’s headquarters at the Reale Arena, Tuesday (5/3/2024), in the second leg of the last 16 of the Champions League. Les Parisiens came in with a 2-0 lead from the first match.
Mbappe then confirmed this superiority through his goal in the 15th minute. The 25-year-old striker doubled it in the 56th minute.
Sociedad, who were late in increasing their intensity, thinned the score in the 89th minute through Mikel Merino. This goal was just a consolation goal for the hosts, with PSG taking home a 4-1 aggregate win.
With this result, PSG also qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals.
PSG immediately spread threats at the start of the match. Mbappe’s shot went over the crossbar, then Bradley Barcola’s close-range opportunity was blocked by the goalkeeper.
GOAL! PSG opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Mbappe received Ousmane Dembele’s breakthrough pass, then outwitted his guard and fired a shot from the left side in the penalty box. The goalkeeper couldn’t anticipate the ball.
Another opportunity from PSG in the 29th minute. This time Mbappe’s shot was blocked by goalkeeper Alex Remiro. The 1-0 score lasted until halftime.
GOAL! PSG increased their lead in the 56th minute. Lee Kang-in’s breakthrough pass was received by Mbappe who only had to face the goalkeeper. He calmly directed the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal.
Sociedad scored a goal in the 63rd minute through Ander Barrenetxea’s header. However, the referee annulled it for offside and was confirmed by VAR.
Achraf Hakimi’s kick to complete a quick attack in the 68th minute was still stopped by the goalkeeper.
Sociedad only increased their intensity entering the last 15 minutes of the match. Igor Zubeldia’s kick and Martin Zubimendi’s attempt still did not meet the target.
Bernat Turrientes shot towards goal in the 79th minute. But Gianluigi Donnarumma was able to block it.
Jon Olasagasti’s chance ended narrowly in the net after hitting a PSG player. But from the resulting corner, Sociedad scored a goal. Mikel Merino’s volley in the 89th minute ended up in the left corner of the goal.
Vitinha’s chance which was thwarted by the goalkeeper during injury time ensured that the score did not change again. PSG won 2-1 over Sociedad.
