Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes Chelsea will find it difficult to win the Premier League as long as Kepa Arrizabalaga remains under the rule.
Carragher compared Frank Lampard’s squad to the material of the Liverpool players at the start of Jurgen Klopp’s coaching. At that time, the Reds only had the choice of Simon Mignolet or Loris Karius as the goalkeeper.
The result Liverpool failed to win the title despite looking good. The new port city team can lift the trophy when the post under the rule is occupied by Alisson Becker.
Together with the Brazilian goalkeeper, Liverpool won the Champions League and English League champions this season.
“Chelsea will not go far unless it replaces their goalkeepers,” Carragher told Sky Sports as reported by the Daily Mail.
“I saw Chelsea and there were many things I liked. They reminded me in many ways about Jurgen Klopp’s position a few years ago,” he continued.
“(Lampard) has been doing everything he can, Frank is still in the initial phase but with lots of big purchases it can transform you as a team,” he added.
Kepa brought Chelsea with a tag of 71.6 million pounds sterling. In his first season with Chelsea, the Spanish player presented the Europa League title.
Lately, Chelsea are reportedly with several goalkeepers. Jan Oblak and Andre Onana are reportedly approached by the Blues.
Based on Squawka’s statistics, Kepa is called the worst goalkeeper in five elite European leagues. Kepa only recorded 53.5 percent of rescue during this season.
That made Kepa the worst goalkeeper in the assessment compiled by goalkeepers with 25 or more appearances this season.
In addition to the goalkeeper, Carragher assesses the Blues need a defender because they conceded many goals this season. Chelsea conceded 54 goals or the worst for a team in the top six in the Premier League.
“To be honest the number of goals that occur depends on the goalkeeper. You also see a lot of central defenders at Chelsea without being truly extraordinary. That’s an area [that must be addressed] if you want to challenge Liverpool and Man City,” Carragher said.
Chelsea currently ranks fourth in the standings by collecting 63 points. The West London team is still competing fiercely with Manchester United and Leicester City to secure Champions League tickets next season.
