Columbia Vs Germany

The Germany National Football Team hasn’t had the greatest of runs in recent times and they’re under performance in the international circuit continued as they suffered a disappointing 2-0 loss at the hands of Columbia in their friendly tie on 20.06.2023. Goals from Luis Diaz and Juan Cuadrado in the second half ensured that Columbia score their first ever victory over the mighty Germans at the Veltins-Arena.

As Germany are set to host the Euro 2024 season, friendly matches like these are meant to set a platform for teams to warm up their game before the final big match and build a tournament-ready squad, they have now suffered an unfortunate home defeat to Colombia, being unable to score even a single goal for their home fans in attendance.

The defeat came after a couple of dismal performances in the previous weeks where they barely managed to pull out a 3-3 draw against Ukraine, but then again failed to score a victory against Poland, who triumphed with a 1-0 winner last week. Needless to remind everyone about the shocking early exit of the Germans in the group stages of the 2022 FIFA World Cup last December. All in all, Germany desperately need to get back on the winning track!

If we are to study Germany’s recent track record, the team has only been able to win one out of their last 5 matches. Getting deeper into the math, they only have three victories from their last eleven encounters in the international circuit.

As the game against Columbia kicked off, Germany did show excellent resilience and some sublime defense work by 21-year-old defender Malick Thiaw, along with keeper Marc Andre ter Stegen, who did pretty well to make some excellent saves in the first half. However, despite having more than 65% of the possession, the home team frequently struggled to play the ball out of their own half, failing to manage a single shot on goal throughout the duration of the first half.

The Columbians were able to break through the shackles as they took the much-needed lead in the 54th minute when Juan Cuadrado intercepted the ball from Emre Can of Germany and swept it across to Luis Diaz, who was able to head the ball into the nets past Ter Stegen. The home team did show some fight back after that, however, their defense seemed to be falling apart as the game progressed further.

Disaster struck the Germans again later in the second half when a handball by Joshua Kimmich allowed the visitors to grab a penalty opportunity to extend their lead. Cuadrado, who had earlier assisted Diaz to get the first goal, came in to take the shot and he converted to give Columbia a 2-0 lead in the 82nd minute.
