Congrats! PSG Champions of the French Ligue 1 2023/2024

Paris Saint-Germain officially became champions of the 2023/2024 French League without playing. AS Monaco’s defeat to Lyon ensured that PSG’s position at the top of the Ligue 1 standings was no longer overtaken. The championship title is also locked even though there are still three games remaining in the season

Last Sunday (28/4/2024), PSG presented a six-goal drama at the Parc des Princes. They were forced to draw by the visiting team Le Havre with a score of 3-3.

Le Havre’s resistance deserves a thumbs up. They took the lead three times through Christopher Operi (19′), Andre Ayew (38′) and Abdoulaye Toure (61′). Even so, PSG were able to equalize through goals from Bradley Barcola (29′), Achraf Hakimi (78′), and Goncalo Ramos (90+5′).

This draw is not good enough. It is true that PSG are still not overtaken at the top of the French League standings, but they were forced to postpone celebrating the title in front of their own supporters.

Fortunately, Sunday (28/4/2024), PSG was actually assisted by another team to win, namely AS Monaco.

AS Monaco lost to Lyon, PSG automatically won

AS Monaco visited Lyon in the 31st week of Ligue 1 2023/2024 duel, Monday (29/4/2024). The match was played at Parc Olympique Lyonnais.

Both teams take turns scoring goals. It was thought that the match would end in a draw after Lyon scored two goals through the actions of Alexandre Lacazette (22′) and Said Benrahma (26′). Monaco also scored twice through Wissam Ben Yedder’s brace (1′, 60′).

So in the final minutes of the match, precisely in the 84th minute, Malick Fofana then decided Lyon’s victory by scoring the third goal. Monaco ran out of time to reply, final score 3-2.

This result does not change Monaco’s position in second place in the standings with 58 points. However, it is certain that Monaco will no longer be able to catch PSG.

PSG are champions of the 2023/2024 French League!

Both teams have played 31 matches together. PSG leads with 70 points. Monaco is in second place with 58 points. So, there is a difference of 12 points.

So, there are three games left this season. In fact, it could be that Monaco wins three consecutive wins, then PSG suffers three consecutive defeats.

If that scenario happened, both teams would both collect 70 points, but PSG would still be the champions. Luis Enrique’s squad is superior head-to-head over Monaco this season.

So, although mathematically the difference of 12 points can still be equaled by Monaco, other determining factors have ensured that PSG lifts the Ligue 1 trophy this season.

PSG’s Record

  • PSG won the 12th league championship trophy in the club’s history.
  • This is PSG’s 10th league trophy in the last 12 seasons. They only failed twice (2020/2021 and 2016/2017).
  • This is the 7th league trophy for Kylian Mbappe with PSG, a sweet parting gift.
  • Luis Enrique has presented two trophies for PSG this season, namely Ligue 1 and the French Super Cup. There are still two more trophies.
