CONMEBOL on Monday has made a decision regarding the venue for the 2021 Copa America, which had Argentina and Colombia as its hosts.
However, a series of events unrelated to football have forced the organizers to change the host of the most important tournament at the level of CONMEBOL teams.
Through a statement on social media, the CONMEBOL announced that the only host for the 2021 Copa America tournament will be Brazil, who will organize it for the second consecutive time after the 2019 edition.
“The Copa America 2021 will be played in Brazil! The start and end dates of the tournament are confirmed. The oldest international tournament in the world will make the whole continent cheer!” the South American body said.
“CONMEBOL thanks President Jair Bolsonaro and his team, and also the Brazilian football confederation for opening the doors of this country for the safest sporting event in the world today. South America will shine in Brazil with all its stars,” the football body added.
The first venue to cancel as the organizer of the Copa America was Colombia, due to internal conflicts in the country, which have affected the local tournament.
While in Argentina, this was due to the rise in the number of infections that have been registered in recent weeks, alerting CONMEBOL, who expected to have fans in the stands.
However, the decision has caused controversy, since Brazil does not face a different situation in terms of the Covid-19 virus pandemic and is currently experiencing an increase in the numbers of infections and deaths.
According to reports, it is still unknown if the CONMEBOL hopes to have the public presence in the stadiums and allowing fans from other countries to support their teams.
