Cori Gauff Advances To Semifinals At Indian Wells For First Time

Cori Gauff

Cori Gauff will compete in the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells in the 2024 season thanks to a win in straight sets.

The host tennis player beat Chinese national Yuan Yue 6-4, 6-3 in the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open.

The third seed took 94 minutes to beat 25-year-old Yuan in their first meeting and is now one step better than his previous best at Indian Wells. In her first two appearances at the tournament, she advanced to the third round and last season, she advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to Aryna Sabalenka.

Thanks to this victory, the 2023 US Open champion is now the youngest female tennis player from home to qualify for the semifinals at Indian Wells since Serena Williams in the 2021 season.

World number 49 Yuan entered the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open having won his last nine matches, after he won the first title of his career in Austin before taking the field in Indian Wells.

The match that ended the Chinese tennis player’s lucky win did not go as smoothly as imagined, because Cori Gauff, who turned 20 this week, committed double fouls 17 times in ten service games. This left him with ten break point opportunities, but he faced all the odds and saved seven of them. He also broke the Chinese tennis player’s serve five times.

The third seed has now reached the semifinals or better at five WTA 1000-level tournaments, after she achieved the feat in Dubai, Beijing, Rome and Cincinnati, which she won before winning last season’s US Open.

In addition, the host tennis player became the third player to advance to five semifinals of the WTA 1000 level tournament before turning 21, joining Caroline Wozniacki (8) and Iga Swiatek (5), since the level tournament was introduced in the 2009 season.

Fighting for a place in the final of the BNP Paribas Open, Gauff will challenge the ninth seed, Maria Sakkari, who beat another host tennis player and 23rd seed, Emma Navarro with 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
