Daniel Cormier told to ESPN reporter Ariel Helwani on Monday that he will be back in the Octagon, but only for one last fight against Stipe Miocic and no one else.
Miocic scored a thumping knockout win over Cormier at UFC 241 in August. It was a conclusive finish and the Croatian, who had been knocked out bad in one round last year, was a champion himself once again.
“At this moment, I’m fighting Stipe Miocic and that’s it for me. The only reason I’m fighting again is to fight a guy that beat me,” Cormier said.
“The next one will be the last one. It has to be Stipe, no one else matters. They wanna make that fight. They want me to fight stipe again.” Cormier added.
Whether he wins or not at his next fight, Cormier hints it will be his last. The 40-year-old fighter hopes a trilogy with Miocic as soon as possible. He is even ready to do it on December 14 at UFC 245 if that is the intention of the UFC.
“I think Stipe’s dealing with some stuff. The sooner the better for me. I’d be down to do it. If December 14 becomes available, that’ll work for me. I’d be happy to get myself ready to go. I’m not gonna wait as long as possible. If he doesn’t wanna fight, then OK.” Cormier said.
“They just told me they’re gonna go talk to Stipe. That’s it. I’m only worried about what I can control. I’m not in a place right now where I’m chasing, waiting, begging. I don’t need to. Either we fight or we don’t. I hope he fights. I hope we run it back like I ran it back with him.” he added.
Cormier is clearly one of the best MMA fighters ever. He was the heavyweight champion and was the light heavyweight champion until he vacated the title. He is undefeated at Heavyweight. The only person he lost to was Jon Jones who beat him twice but one fight was declared a no contest because Jones tested positive for PEDs.
