Daniil Medvedev Returns Holger Rune From Indian Wells

Daniil Medvedev showed some of his best play at the BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells 2024 season to advance to the semifinals of the first Masters 1000 tournament since Rome last season.

Missing the ball was rarely seen from the 28 year old tennis player as he remained focused on beating seventh seed Holger Rune with 7-5, 6-4 in the BNP Paribas Open quarter-final match which lasted 1 hour 59 minutes.

The player, who qualified for the final at Indian Wells last season, varied his return position, but periodically started from behind the baseline area before appearing more aggressive in rallies. He won 62 percent of the points when he returned Rune’s second serve.

The Danish tennis player often goes to the net area to overcome the return of the former world number 1, but the fourth seed can still find a way to overcome the Danish national’s strategy or catch any ball very quickly.

“The conditions were tough, especially in the first set, the conditions were very, very windy,” said Medvedev. “It’s difficult to play beautifully, let’s put it that way. The only thing you have to try is to win another point. I’m happy that in the end I was able to play with a little more solidity, some impressive serves in crucial moments. I feel happy to be able to progress to the next round.”

Starting the match, the two players played fiercely until the score was a 5-5 draw. From this position, the fourth seed performed better and won the last two games.

The 2021 US Open champion came back after trailing 0-2. His consistency made Rune feel frustrated, including making 41 unforced errors throughout the match. The tennis player who has won six Masters titles also had to fight extra hard from 0/30 when he had a chance to win the match before recording a 2-1 advantage in their head to head.

In the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open, the fourth seed will meet the 17th seed, Paul, after the host tennis player beat the ninth seed, Casper Ruud, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.

“Tommy is really tough. “He’s been so close to the top 10 for quite a long time,” commented Medvedev about Paul, who he beat in both of their previous meetings.

“He played well, so I know if I want to try to win it, I have to perform at my best and that’s what I will try to do.”

After recording 13-2 in the 2024 season, Daniil Medvedev is aiming to complete his collection of Masters titles held in hard-court tournaments by winning the title at Indian Wells.
