Liverpool managed to strengthen the top of the standings after beating Leicester City 2-1 in the fourth week of the English Premier League played at King Power Stadium on Saturday (1/9).
The Reds, who performed with the composition of their best front lines, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohammed Salah, appeared sharply in this match. Merseyside’s squad have even won two goals in the first half.
From Official Premier League pages, Leicester appeared dominant with 51.2 percent of possession. They produced 12 shots, five of which were on target. While Liverpool produced four kicks heading towards the goal from a total of 10 chances.
The match began with a slow tempo, Leicester City seemed to want to build an attack through midfield. However, their efforts are always stuck in the final quarter of the field. The first opportunity was actually obtained by Liverpool in the third minute. However, Roberto Firmino’s unsuccessful ball was failed cleared by Mohammed Salah to beat goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
Liverpool’s first goal was created by Sadio Mane in the 10th minute. Andrew Robertson’s cross was greeted by Mane’s header to teat the Foxes’ goal which was escorted by Kasper Schmeichel. Leicester actually almost equalized in the 23rd minute. The ingenious breakthrough bait Harry Maguire made Demarai Gray just face Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker in the penalty box. Unfortunately, Gray’s shot could still be blocked by Alisson’s status as the most expensive goalkeeper after being redeemed from AS Roma.
Liverpool managed to double the lead at the end of normal time in the first half. James Milner’s corner pass was perfectly completed by Roberto Firmino’s accurate header. 2-0 score graced the first half.
Entering the second half, Leicester managed to reduce the position after utilizing a blunder made by Liverpool’s back line in the 63rd minute. Rachid Ghezzal managed to take advantage of the situation to conquer Alisson. This goal was at the same time stopping Liverpool’s clean sheet record after recording nil in three consecutive Premier League matches.
The host’s attempt to equalize did not work. Liverpool managed to maintain a 2-1 lead until the match was over.
This victory makes Liverpool increasingly solid at the top of the standings with a collection of 12 points. The Merseyside club are three points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea who have not competed.
