Novak Djokovic is attempting to win the calender year Grand Slam with a win at the 2021 US Open but on Tuesday he was challenged by the crowd when he interpreted chants for Danish, Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune.
“Honestly, I don’t even know what they’re chanting about. I thought they’re booing. I do not know. Well, it’s not the ideal atmosphere to play in, I can tell you that. But I’ve been in similar situations many times, so I know how to handle it,” Djokovic said.
“It is always impossible. That’s all I can say. I will have to focus on myself, and do what I need to do. I guess, I just have to see what it feels like on the court and try to preserve it. That’s all I can do right now,” Djokovic added.
The No. 1 seed Djokovic had nothing but praise for Rune, who he defeated in four sets in the opening round of the 2021 US Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Despite winning easily in the opening game with a score of 6-1, Djokovic still lost in game 2 when he lacked the sharpness and decisiveness needed in the tie-break series. He lost with a score of 5-7.
However, in the remaining 2 games, Djokovic tightened his grip and won an overwhelming victory with scores of 6-2, 6-1 respectively, closing the match that lasted 2 hours and 15 minutes. It’s not a perfect start, but it helps Djokovic understand what pressure he was facing.
“It is difficult to talk about games 3 and 4, because my opponent moves just enough. From my side, I have started the land contest very well. I played really, really well in the first game. Then, I don’t know, I led 4-3 in game 2 after winning the break-point.” Djokovic said.
“Everything went very well, then I lost serve 1 again. Kudos to him for a tough fight. He has the courage to cheer in the back. For me, it’s very difficult to play the first match, even though I have a lot of experience playing on this court. For him, this is the first time.” he added.
