Tennis News: Austrian, Dominic Thiem admitted he would be surprised if the US Open was permitted to be held without delay due to COVID-19.
Dominic Thiem responded gladly to the news that he could resume training on the tennis court, but admitted that he felt empty until he learned more information about when the tennis tournament would resume.
Austrian sports minister Werner Kogler has given Thiem permission to return to the training ground, while most of the government is still taking steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
However, although Thiem is happy with the positive things he got, he is not sure if it will help him until there are more real plans about when the tournament will be held again.
“That’s amazing news. I can’t wait to get back to the field, “Thiem told Sky Sports Austria.
“But it will still take a long time before the tournament starts again. Let’s say the suspension is continued for another three or four months, no tennis player will survive the training for that long. We have played long enough throughout our careers so that one month of preparation will be enough to be in the best condition.”

Thiem also believes the US Open will be a victim of COVID-19 fierceness. He described the hope that the tournament would resume in the hard-court season in North America as unrealistic.
“I will be happy if the tournament starts again,” added Thiem.
“I don’t care what kind of field. The hard-court season in America will be very unrealistic. I miss tennis. I am happy that I can practice again, but I will not return to training with a solid program until there is a realistic schedule.”
Previously known, the Austrian government has confirmed that a number of sports will resume from May 1 as long as they comply with distance rules. The news surfaced four weeks after restaurants, bars, theaters, schools, shops and other gatherings were closed to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
“That’s amazing news. I can’t wait to get back to the field. Until then, I will stay in shape like before,” Thiem told Sky Sport.
Even though the world number 3, Thiem can return to training, he has to wait longer to get back into action at the ATP tournament. All professional tennis tournaments are still suspended until July, despite fears that the suspension could be extended. Doubts are also rife about the convening of the US Open as planned and USTA, the organizer of the US Open, is expected to make the final decision in June about the certainty of the US Open.
