David Beckham did not hide his disappointment over Manchester United’s decision to sell Scott McTominay. The Man United legend emphasized that the club should have retained academy players who understand the soul of the Red Devils.
McTominay, who is now shining at Napoli, is proof of Man United’s wrong decision. With 18 goal contributions, the Scottish midfielder is the key to Napoli’s success in Serie A.
Meanwhile, Man United is actually slumping in the Premier League standings with a bad record. Beckham believes that the sale of McTominay reflects a larger structural problem at Old Trafford.
Beckham regrets the practice of selling academy players only for financial reasons. For him, players who love the club like McTominay should be retained.
The ‘Class of 92’ legend emphasized the importance of stability and trust in local players. He admitted that he was disappointed to see Man United lose its identity.
“I hate to see young players who grew up at Man United leave the club. We shouldn’t sell players just for financial reasons,” Beckham told The Athletic.
Sold for a cheap price of £25.7 million, McTominay proved his quality at Napoli. The nickname ‘bottle opener’ was attached to him thanks to the important goals he scored.
Thanks to his performance, Napoli are on the verge of the Serie A title. McTominay’s transformation is proof that he deserves a bigger chance at Man United.
“If I don’t perform well on the pitch, no matter what I have done, I can be sold. But Man United should not sell a player who loves the club like me,” added Beckham
Beckham then compared it to the Class of 92 who according to him at that time they had full trust from Sir Alex Ferguson. Stability was the key to the success of Man United’s golden generation.
In contrast, McTominay had to change coaches and positions during his time at Man United. He never got a permanent role even though he was often a consistent player.
“We were lucky to be part of a stable club with the same manager and players for years. Stability produces success, it’s that simple,” recalled Beckham.
