Dustin Poirier has vowed to put on a show for MMA fans on Septmber 7 when he takes UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242. The fight takes place in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Poirer believes that he is the best lightweight fighter in the world and that he will beat Nurmagomedov in their match this Saturday.
“It’s huge. It’s history. When I go out there and beat Khabib, it’s not a question of am I the best UFC lightweight? It’s a question of am I the best lightweight to ever fight in mixed martial arts with the run I’m on.” Poirier said.
“Max Halloway, Anthony Pettis, Eddie Alvarez, Khabib Nurmagomedov, winning over those guys in a row in main events, over and over, that’s the best run in lightweight history.”
“If I go out there and stop Khabib, I’m the best lightweight fighter to ever strap on a pair of four-ounce gloves. Simple and plain, I’m not wrong in saying it.” Poirier added.
Poirier turned professional in 2009, he quickly compiled a record of 25-5-1. And the American won over Max Halloway, Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje, and Anthony Pettis in his last four fights.
“This is going to start the reign. This is the fight that gives me the undisputed title. But on the other side, this is the fight where I etch my name into the history books forever. Because of this win, I’m going to forever be a part of the best of the best of mixed martial arts.” Poirier said.
“But I’m 30 years old and I still feel like my best fights are ahead of me. I’m starting to hit my stride. This is the beginning of “The Diamond” reign.” he added.
Khabib Nurmagomedov, is huge favourite to win over Dustin Poirier at UFC 242 fight.
Nurmagomedov on the other hand, hasn’t had a fight since he improved to 27-0 as a professional with his victory over McGregor at UFC 229 last October.
Many people believed that the Russian icon is still the heavy favourite to come out on top and defend his 155-pound title over Poirier on this weekend.
