Eleider Alvarez (23-0-0, 11 KOs) has been a long-time contender for WBC champion Adonis Stevenson, but like most of Stevenson’s other potential rivals, the duel never materialised. Now the undefeated Colombian will finally get his chance for a world title against Sergey Kovalev.
Alvarez will fight Kovalev on August 4, in Atlanta City. The Colombian is the mandatory challenger to Kovalev’s World Boxing Association light heavyweight title.
“I’ll be ready for that. This is my best opportunity! It’s something really big. In the past, despite the fact that I fought against opponents of lower level than Kovalev shows, I always gave my 100% in the ring. And on August 4th, it will not be different. I will give my 100% and I will be in my best shape.” Alvarez said.
“When the challenge is bigger, I always perform better. I’m on a mission knowing that this is my biggest career challenge. My jab is my best tool and I’m going to use it a lot against Kovalev.
“If I were scared, I would not be boxing right now. That’s why I chose to play this sport. Despite the fact that I have never been opposed to world champions in a fight in the past, I still faced powerful punchers so this is not a problem for me.” Alvarez added.
Meanwhile, Kovalev, he knows that he has a big order to take up. However the “Krusher” is eager to put the gloves on the Colombian side to prove he is the boxer to beat in the division.
“He’s undefeated. He still holds the position of number one challenger to the WBC title. It does not scare me. I’m always ready to face any champion!” Kovalev said.

On the other hand, Main Events promoter and CEO, Kathy Duva, as well as GYM promoter and president, Yvon Michel, said to the astonishment of the fans especially following the misfortune Kovalev against Stevenson that the duel championship negotiated very quickly.
“From my perspective, it was extremely easy to do. We had a meeting I came back from the meeting with a warrant.” Duva said.
“And so, a fight for the title has been formalised. It was not too difficult when you have two fighters who want to fight” Duva added.
Rising light heavyweight and current WBA champion Dmitry Bivol (13-0-0, 11 KOs) will also be on the 4 August card. He will face veteran boxer Malawi, Isaac Chilemba.
