England’s unbeaten run came to an end on Saturday night as they fell 1-0 to Brazil in a tightly contested international friendly at Wembley Stadium.
The Three Lions, under the watchful eye of manager Gareth Southgate, were undone by a late strike from Brazilian prodigy Endrick, showcasing both the promise and frustration of a team in transition.
“I was pleased. I don’t like losing matches. I thought there were lots of very good individual performances from players who’ve hardly played for England.” Southgate said.
“I thought our regular players were very good. With 15 minutes to go we’re thinking we’ve managed to see a lot of new players.
“We’ve had our share of the game. We’ve had as many attempts on goal as they have. The difference in the end was one moment. That is the ruthlessness at this level.” Southgate added.
Endrick’s goal proved to be the decisive moment in a match that ebbed and flowed throughout. Both sides displayed attacking intent, creating opportunities but ultimately lacking the killer instinct to convert.
England’s best chance arguably fell to young striker Anthony Gordon in the first half. However, his shot from a promising position cannoned off the crossbar, leaving the home fans sighing in disappointment.
“This match against a team like Brazil provides them with a real test, and it’s important they learn from both the successes and the areas where we can improve.” Southgate said.
With the disappointment of the Brazil defeat still fresh, England will have little time to dwell as they prepare to host Belgium for another friendly on Tuesday night.
This match offers an opportunity for Southgate to rotate his squad, giving fringe players a chance to impress and potentially stake a claim for a place in the Euro squad.
