The England National Team surprisingly had to suffer a crushing defeat to Hungary with a score of 0-4 in the continued match of Group 3A of the 2022-2023 UEFA Nations League. The coach of The Three Lions – the nickname of the English national team, Gareth Southgate, also revealed the cause of the defeat.
As is known, the match between England vs Hungary took place on Wednesday (15/6/2022) at Molineux Stadium. Harry Kane et al looked bad in that match.
Meanwhile, Hungary were able to play well and won the match through goals scored by Roland Sallai (16′ and 70′), Zsolt Nagy (80′), and Daniel Gazdag (89′). The defeat plunged England at the bottom of Group 3A.
After the match, Southgate explained why the Three Lions could lose so badly. According to him, his team actually started the game well. However, the first goal from Hungary made his team mentally shrink.
“We started well. The first goal made us lose confidence a little bit,” said Southgate, quoted from the official UEFA website, Wednesday (15/6/2022).
Indeed, furthermore, Southgate claimed Harry Kane and co had plenty of chances to equalise. However, again they missed out and the second goal made the mentality of their team weaker. “We had chances early in the second half but the second goal at half-time was the real killer for us,” said the 51-year-old.
On top of that, Southgate realised that with so many young players being included, it had an impact on the game. They are judged not to have the appropriate balance. “I chose a very young team, that’s my responsibility.
I didn’t get the balance right in the two games against Hungary. After the first goal, anxiety crept up a bit and we couldn’t recover from that.”
