Chelsea won victory over Newcastle United in the quarter-finals of the 2023-2024 English League Cup. The two teams played at Stamford Bridge Stadium, Tuesday (19/12/2023).
Playing to a 1-1 draw in normal time, the two teams had to fight in the penalty shootout. The Blues secured a 4-2 win in the high-five round.
Mauricio Pochettino’s team tried to hit the ground running from the start. Unfortunately, a golden opportunity through Conor Gallagher’s shot when the game had only been running for seven minutes was still thwarted by the crossbar.
In the 16th minute, it was Newcastle who opened the scoring through Wilson’s goal. Starting with a quick counterattack, Wilson alone carried the ball from the middle of the field. Thiago Silva and Benoit Badiashile failed to stop Wilson who then succeeded in beating Dorde Petrovic.
Raheem Sterling had two golden opportunities in a row in the 28th and 29th minutes. Unfortunately, both failed to produce results. The 0-1 score for Newcastle’s advantage lasted until halftime.
After the break, Chelsea increased the intensity of their attacks in search of an equalizer. The home team created a series of opportunities, but none of them resulted in a goal.
Chelsea’s tireless struggle only paid off in the second minute of injury time through a goal scored by Mudryk taking advantage of Trippier’s mistake. The winner must also be determined via penalty shootout.
In the penalty shootout, Trippier and Ritchie’s failure meant Chelsea had the right to emerge victorious with a score of 1-1 (4-2) and qualify for the semifinals.
Mauricio Pochettino reveals the key to Chelsea’s success in defeating Newcastle United in the 2023-2024 English League Cup. The Argentinian trainer admitted that the moment the Blues – nicknamed Chelsea – conceded first was a painful thing for him.
However, Pochettino gave a message to his team to keep believing until the end. Then, Mykhailo Mudryk successfully scored an equalizer in the 90th minute after two minutes which extended Chelsea’s breath.
“Very good match. We suffered when we conceded, it was our fault. I told the players to always believe until the end. “The goal was possible because we believed,” said Pochettino in the club’s official release, Wednesday (20/12/2023).
