Manchester United were dramatically held to a draw from Everton 3-3 in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Sunday (6/2).
Man United actually performed brilliantly in the first half and managed to lead 2-0 through the actions of Edinson Cavani and Bruno Fernandes.
Cavani showed his class as a first-class bomber through a neat goal in the 24th minute. His powerful header from Marcus Rashford’s cross forced Robin Olsen to take the ball from the net.
Everton almost managed to equalize in the 41st minute through Richarlison. Unfortunately the Brazilian international’s shot was saved by David De Gea.
Four minutes later, it was Man Utd who succeeded in doubling their lead. Bruno Fernandes’ accurate shot into the right corner of the goal couldn’t be read by Olsen.
Everton made a surprise early in the second half. Abdoulaye Doucoure’s goal in the 49th minute followed by James Rodriguez’s goal three minutes later to make it 2-2.
The match was fierce since the position was equally strong. However, the Red Devils were able to reclaim the lead back to 3-2 thanks to a header from Scott McTominay in the 70th minute.
Everton don’t want to just give up. The hard work of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad finally got a miracle in injury time. Dominic Calvert-Lewin managed to take advantage of a corner to equalize the score 3-3. The draw also lasted until the game was over.
Goalkeeper David de Gea was accused of being the cause of Manchester United’s failure to win over Everton.
Quoted from the Daily Mail, two Premier League legends, Jamie Redknapp and Gary Neville accused David de Gea as the cause of Manchester United’s failure to win over Everton.
Redknapp considers the Spanish goalkeeper guilty of conceding. De Gea was late in closing Calvert-Lewin’s attack so that the Everton striker’s shot was only pushed over and became a wild ball that Doucoure took advantage of. On Calvert-Lewin’s goal, De Gea moved too late to block the 23-year-old attacker.
“De Gea as a goalkeeper must take everything. He must be brave and assess the situation. If he is more courageous in making decisions, I am sure he will win this,” said Redknapp quoted by the Daily Mail.
“He was guilty of the first goal and of course the mistake there. But it was a good attacking game from Dominic Calvert-Lewin,” added Redknapp.
Similar comments were made by Manchester United legend, Gary Neville. In Neville’s eyes, De Gea’s performance was quite bad against Everton.
However, Neville did not only blame De Gea, the Manchester United defense, especially the duo Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire, was accused of being the cause of Manchester United to lose two points in the match.
“In this match [Manchester United] defense was bad, like the opposite of what we have seen [in the previous weeks]. They played well but lost defending,” said Neville.
“De Gea did not come out when the ball came. You want him to come out and eat the striker, it was also not a good night for a goalkeeper or center-back, we know they need a strong center-back pair,” said Neville continued.
