Chelsea failed to win after being matched by Southampton 3-3 in the fifth matchday of the Premier League at Stamford Bridge Stadium, Saturday (17/10).
Timo Werner opened Chelsea’s lead in the 15th minute. After receiving Ben Chilwell’s pass, Werner outwitted a Southampton defender and brought the ball into the opponent’s penalty box.
Seeing the opposing defenders pile up in the penalty box, Werner shifted the ball from left to right before firing a shot that goalkeeper Alex McCarthy could not anticipate.
Werner added advantage for the hosts in the 29th minute. Jorginho’s breakthrough bait from the mid was successfully exploited by Werner after escaping the Southampton offside trap.
After outwitting the opposing defender, now it was goalkeeper McCarthy who was tricked by Werner by gouging the ball. Despite being under the shadow of a Southampton defender, Werner was able to score a goal by heading the ball.
Before the first half ended, striker Danny Ings reduced the score to 1-2 in the 43rd minute. Utilizing Che Adams’ breakthrough bait, Ings escaped the offside trap and also passed goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
In the second half it was Che Adams’ turn to write his name on the scoreboard. In the 57th minute Adams scored from Kurt Zouma and Kepa blunders.
Zouma’s back-pass ball is too slow and can be won by Adams. Furthermore, Adam passed through Kepa. There was chaos in front of the Chelsea goal, but Adam did not waste the opportunity with his goal.
Two minutes later Kai Havertz returned to bring the Blues ahead to 3-2 thanks to Werner’s assist. The goal came from Christian Pulisic’s neat acceleration before giving the ball to Werner. From the right, Werner finds Havertz and it is the goal.
Chelsea’s victory that was in sight was shattered after defender Jannik Vestegaard scored the final goal of the game in the 90 + 2 minute.
Vestegaard’s goal came from Ryan Bertrand’s free kick from the left side which then became chaotic in the Chelsea penalty box.
When the ball moved wildly, in a fairly free position Vestegaard fired a right-footed volley which penetrated the Chelsea defense and goalkeeper Kepa couldn’t anticipate. Final score draw 3-3.
