Enzo Fernandez immediately apologized to his teammates regarding the racial behavior case involving him when he joined the Chelsea squad on a pre-season tour in the United States.
As reported by the Daily Mail, Fernandez arrived in Atlanta, USA, Monday (29/7/2024) local time. As soon as he arrived, he immediately apologized personally after his controversial attitude of singing a racial song while celebrating the Argentine national team winning the 2024 Copa America.
A number of Chelsea players were indeed furious with Fernandez’s racial actions. They even unfollowed Fernandez’s social media accounts.
Not only apologizing, Fernandez also voluntarily offered to donate to an anti-discrimination charity as an acknowledgement of the mistake he made. The former Benfica player’s move is said to have impressed The Blues management.
A similar action was also taken by the club to show support for the player. Chelsea will match the amount of donation that Fernandez will give to the charity through the Chelsea Foundation.
Regarding the action that will be taken against Fernandez, Chelsea confirmed that there will be no punishment given to the 23-year-old player. The disciplinary procedure has also been closed by the West London club.
Previously, Chelsea’s new coach, Enzo Maresca also stated that Fernandez’s racial case was over. He also ensured that there would be no problems when Fernandez rejoins the team.
“I don’t think there will be any problems with Enzo Fernandez when he returns. [Enzo] has no bad intentions, I have spoken to Enzo. Everything is clear now,” said Maresca.
“All the problems have been clarified by the player and the club. I am very happy that the player [Enzo] made a statement to apologize. The club did the same. There is nothing to add to this situation, it is clear and clarified.”
