Manchester United officially fired Erik ten Hag from his position as coach this season. The dismissal was the result of Man United’s 1-2 defeat to West Ham United, last weekend.
MU’s 1-2 defeat to West Ham occurred on the ninth matchday at the London Stadium, Sunday (10/27/2024). Goals from Crysencio Summerville and Jarrod Bowen’s penalty could only be answered by Casemiro’s goal.
The bad result in London was the Red Devils’ fourth defeat this season. With that defeat, MU’s position in the Premier League standings has slumped to 14th place.
Not wanting to continue to be in a slump, MU management made the decision to fire Erik ten Hag on Monday (10/28/2024).
“Erik ten Hag is leaving his role as manager of the Manchester United first team,” MU wrote in an official release.
Erik ten Hag was appointed as Man Utd coach in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, namely the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
“We thank Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him the best for the future,” said MU.
While waiting for the arrival of a new coach, the Red Devils appointed former PSV Eindhoven coach, Ruud van Nistelrooy as caretaker.
“Ruud van Nistelrooy will take over the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, while a permanent head coach is being recruited.”
Ten Hag was recruited in 2022 because of his fantastic achievements while leading Ajax. Ten Hag was even predicted to be the ideal coach to boost Man United’s achievements which had been lacking titles in the last decade.
Unfortunately, expectations did not match reality. Ten Hag was also unable to revive the glory of the Red Devils as a top team full of champions.
In fact, Ten Hag has an ideal track record as a top coach. He grew up with the legendary philosophy of total football.
