Fabian Marozsan Hungarian nationality caused one of the biggest and shocking defeats at the Italian Open, Rome 2023 season.
The world number 135 surprisingly defeated world number 2 Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 7-6 in the third round of the Italian Open.
The tennis player, who had to go through the qualifying rounds, entered the ATP tournament for the first time in his career in Rome this season. But he showed no nerves as he outplayed former world number 1 Alcaraz by showing some neat shots of quality.

“It’s not easy to say something, I feel very, very happy,” said Marozsan. “I can’t imagine this. This was my dream last night. Now that it’s come true, I feel very happy, very happy about this. I was just trying to do something special, maybe win a few games or a set or something like this, and now I just beat the world number two.”
Alcaraz entered the match 30-2 in 2023, but periodically struggled to deal with the Hungarian’s groundstrokes that did not give the second seed much of a chance to gain control in rallies.
The world number 135’s dropshot matched Madrid Open champion Alcaraz throughout the match and he claimed the biggest win of his career to date after 1 hour 40 minutes.
“Everything seemed perfect this time. The crowd, the weather, the pitch. I just feel happy that I did my job,” added Fabian Marozsan.
“I think in the tiebreak it was 1/4 and I won six points in a row. It’s amazing. I don’t know what happened during the pts, I just tried to return every ball and try my best. I was trying to figure out how to win points against him in difficult situations and this is what happened. And I don’t know what to say.”
For this surprising performance, the 23-year-old tennis player, Marozsan was rewarded with a fourth round match in the Italian Open against Croatian tennis player, Borna Coric.
In the third round, seeded 15th, Coric managed to beat Alcaraz’s compatriot, Roberto Carballes Baena 7-6, 6-1.
