Arsenal coach, Mikel Arteta, asked his troops to get up after the team nicknamed The Gunners was eliminated from the Champions League. The Bayern vs Arsenal match was held at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday (17/4/2024).
Arsenal’s progress was stopped because they lost to Bayern Munich with a score of 0-1 in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals. One goal from Joshua Kimmich was enough to make Bayern qualify for the semifinals because they were ahead 3-2 on aggregate.
The match was tight from the start. In fact, the two teams had to play a goalless draw in the first half. In the 48th minute, Arsenal almost conceded. Wiliam Lintasa managed to head the ball from Joshua Kimmich’s pass. However, Lintasa’s header still hit the goalpost. Nevertheless, Arsenal had to swallow the bitter pill in the 63rd minute. Arsenal’s goal guarded by David Raya collapsed after failing to block Kimmich’s header.
After the match, Arteta continued to praise the achievements of his team in the Champions League. According to the Spanish coach, Arsenal performed extraordinary considering that this season was Gabriel Jesus and his friends’ first appearance in the Champions League after being absent for seven years.
“We really want to get to the semifinals or final in our first year back in the Champions League. You can see other clubs, to get to the semifinals it takes six or seven years. We are very close to the semifinals, but this is the reality,” explained Arteta.
Because of this, Arteta asked Arsenal not to slump. He called for a revival of the London Cannon to focus on remaining competitions. “We have to get through the pain tonight and get up tomorrow. We have to show the same attitude as we did here,” said Arteta.
Failure in the Champions League could give Arsenal the maximum in the race to win the Premier League. Currently, Arsenal is still on track to win the title. With 2 matches remaining, Arsenal is in second place with 71 points or only 2 points behind Manchester City as the top of the standings.
Similar to Arsenal, Man City will also focus on the Premier League. The team coached by Josep “Pep” Guardiola was also eliminated from the Champions League because they lost on penalties to Real Madrid.
