Liverpool had to swallow the bitter pill after falling at Arsenal headquarters with a score of 3-2.
The exciting match Arsenal vs Liverpool was held at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal’s headquarters on Sunday, October 9, 2022.
In that match, Virgil Van Dijk, a Liverpool defender, revealed Liverpool’s big homework.
Along with the disappointing results, their form has often been worse at the start of the season.
These results are not the start that the Reds want, of course this season is far from expectations considering last season Liverpool were Champions League finalists.
Although there was some good play from Liverpool at the Emirates and the match was ultimately decided by a penalty kick.
It’s hard to argue that the Reds deserved the result.
Still, Virgil van Dijk struggled to get past the fact that the decisive goal came from a controversial decision.
“Obviously it was a very difficult match for both sides. We had good moments, we had bad moments,” said the Dutch defender.
“Then it was decided with a penalty which from my point of view is not a penalty,” he added.
“But it goes really fast, I haven’t seen it in slow motion. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the points to take us back to Liverpool.”
“It’s hard to accept conceding goals in general. But we know they are in the best moment of their period. They had a great season.”
“We know it will always be difficult. I think we had good moments, created good chances. It’s difficult to lose it with a penalty in my opinion, but that’s the problem, so we have to deal with it.”
Van Dijk appeared to be more fixated on penalties than his side’s defensive blunders.
The disaster that allowed Arsenal to score three goals. He admits that self-confidence is a problem because of the bad looks that keep piling up.
“Confidence is definitely what plays a role. We are all human,” said the Dutch defender.
“Sometimes you need a little bit of confidence in certain moments. If it’s not that high, it won’t help in certain situations,” he said.
“Every human being needs confidence to perform at the highest level,” he continued.
“If you don’t win, the confidence starts to fade,” said the former Southampton defender.
“We know we can turn it around but we have to work hard. That’s the only thing to do and the only way forward too.”
After a 3-2 loss to Arsenal, Liverpool have now dropped points in six of their first eight games of the season.
Liverpool is now perched in 10th position with a collection of 10 points from 8 matches.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are still at the top of the standings with 24 points.
