Ferrari has not yet given up on developing its SF1000 during this 2020 season despite its obvious performance deficit.
Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto said the team does not intend to put aside the development program of the latest addition to Maranello, in the hope of saving what can be saved while preparing for the medium-term future.
“We have not abandoned this car. We are working on several fronts and also for 2021. We will bring some updates but not in the next races.” Binotto said.
Meanwhile the following of two GPs, in Belgium and Italy, Ferrari usually suit the Prancing Horse well, the power deficit of its powertrain compared to the competition has turned the tables somewhat this season.
“For Belgium and Monza we have less downforce so we have specifically developed packages for there and then there will be other developments in anticipation of 2021.” Binotto said.
Ferrari started the 2020 F1 season in huge trouble. Compared to 2019 Ferrari is worse in qualifying trim and race pace. As Ferrari works to speed up the arrival of developments that it hopes will fix the aerodynamic problems it’s identified.
However, Binotto thinks the SF1000 engine is the main reason, especially considering their customers Alfa and Haas were also slower than last year.
“I think we saw in Barcelona that we’re not fast enough, but we’re not expecting such a difficult situation. So, it’s certainly worse compared to expectations.” Binotto said.
“Three races in a row, we’ve got a couple of weeks before Silverstone which will be important for us to see all the aspects of the car, team organisations, whatever needs to be improved.
“It will take a long time [to improve],” he said. “I think patience will be required. As I said before, we need to improve all the areas, it’s not something that a simple trick will address it, or a simple solution.” the Italian added.
