London Blue giants Chelsea have finally reached an agreement to sign Wesley Fofana who was previously Leicester City centre-back Wesley Fofana.
The Athletic report there has finally been a breakthrough in the saga and that the Frenchman will move to Stamford Bridge.
The Foxes had turned down an offer from the Blues for the 21-year-old earlier this week, but now a deal has been reached.
Reports suggest his fee is £76.4m, which would be a world record for a centre-back, more than the £73.94m Manchester United paid for Harry Maguire.
Personal terms with Chelsea will certainly not be a problem given how much the player wants to leave.
Thomas Tuchel’s men had previously made two bids for the defender but both failed to live up to Leicester’s assessment.
Fofana had been dropped by Brendan Rodgers for the 2-1 defeat by Southampton last Saturday as he appeared to have asked not to play in the game.
The former Liverpool boss said before the game that he had left Fofana because he was not in the right frame of mind to join the rest of the squad.
“I mentioned this week about coming to a Premier League game and maybe one or two players aren’t in the right frame of mind, you can’t bring them in and of course we can’t,” Rodgers said.
“So that’s the reason for the change,” he added.
The highly rated defender signed for Leicester from French side Saint-Etienne for £36.5m in October 2020 – but he has only made 52 appearances for the Midlands club, due to a broken leg he sustained last season during a pre-season friendly against Villareal.
“(We) might see some players at least (leave) to try and allow us to do business to bring in some players,” he said. “That’s the club model in terms of players moving on and spending money on other players,” explained Rodgers.
