Flick: Barcelona defeat was ‘unfair’, but Inter Milan deserved to reach UCL final

Barcelona had to admit Inter Milan’s superiority with an aggregate of 7-6 in the Champions League semifinals, Wednesday (7/5/2025). Coach Hansi Flick admitted that he was disappointed with this result, especially with several referee decisions that were considered not in his team’s favor.

Although he felt the result was unfair, Flick still acknowledged Inter’s quality that deserved to advance to the final. He also praised the performance of Simone Inzaghi and his players who performed solidly throughout the match.

In the midst of disappointment, Flick showed a sporting attitude by congratulating Inter Milan. Watch the full reaction of the German coach below.

Flick felt that several decisions by referee Szymon Marciniak were more in favor of Inter. He gave an example of a penalty incident for Inter which was initially not given by the referee, but changed after VAR intervention.

“We are all disappointed because we have given everything in this match,” Flick said in a press conference.

“Some 50-50 decisions always favor Inter, but that’s football. I am proud of my team, I think the result is unfair and some referee decisions are very good, but not for us,” he explained.

Despite his disappointment, Flick still gave his appreciation to Inter. He acknowledged the quality of the Nerazzurri’s game both in terms of defense and attack.

“Today, Inter’s attackers were very good, they controlled the ball well and their players are very strong and experienced,” said Flick.

“I want to add something, because I also talked about the referee: I want to congratulate Inter, because they played great, and I wish them luck in Munich,” he added.

Flick admitted that his team still needs a lot of improvement, especially in terms of experience. He promised to analyze this match in preparation for next season.

“We have a young team and need to develop. Our job is to be better in all aspects, both defensively and offensively,” said Flick.

“We will analyze this match, but this is football and we can’t always win. We have to accept it. Now this match is over and we have to focus on the next match,” he said.

With his professional attitude, Flick has proven himself to be a world-class coach. Despite being eliminated, Barcelona still showed promising performance for next season.

Meanwhile, Inter will be looking to win the Champions League trophy for the first time since 2010. The final in Munich on June 1 will be their toughest test yet.
