Anthony Joshua is a biggest heavyweight champion lately. He had the biggest boxing fight of his life with Andy Ruiz Jr last December in Saudi Arabia.
The WBA, WBO, IBF, and IBO heavyweight champion Joshua earned $60m, meanwhile, Ruiz earned $10m in their second bout.
Speaking to reporters, former British Commonwealth light heavyweight champion Peter Oboh said Joshua could earn much money from different organizations.
“In boxing when you are holding more than one title each organization can only get a fee from a fight when their own title is being defended,” Oboh said.
“Because of the issues involved, the chance of being stripped of some titles is higher when one is holding more than one belt although there is that temptation of one wanting to defend the belt individually. I think Anthony Joshua has to think fast and flow with the system.
“Remember, Joshua earned $60m against Ruiz’s $10 m. I feel strongly Joshua should imitate ex-boxing world champions like Lenox Lewis, the Klitschko brothers, who never dodge a fight. It is when you get mega opponents that you make megabucks.” Oboh added.
As soon as Joshua reclaimed all his titles by beating Ruiz, he was ordered by the IBF to defend his belt against mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev in 2020. The Briton also ordered by WBO to defend his belt against Oleksandr Usyk.
However, Oboh insisted that Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury are the best fighters in the heavyweight class. The heavyweight pair rematch on February 22, with a trilogy bout already signed to follow.
“Right now, it’s either Tyson Fury or current WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder that can be regarded as the best in the heavyweight class. Joshua should plan for them to earn global respect,” Oboh said.
Oboh held the British, Commonwealth, WBA Inter-Continental light heavyweight titles between 2002 and 2004. The 51-year-old man was popularly known for his impressive knockout of former top light heavyweight contender, Ole Klemensten.
