Fernando Torres’ career in the world of coaching is slowly on the rise. Recently he was officially appointed as Atletico Madrid Team B coach.
The 40-year-old hung up his boots in 2020, after a brilliant career at domestic and national team level, and joined the coaching staff at his boyhood club in 2021.
Throughout his career as a player, Torres has collected 110 caps with the Spanish national team, including winning the World Cup title in 2010.
Apart from that, he also played an important role in La Furia Roja’s victory at Euro 2008 and 2012, leaving his mark by scoring goals in both finals.
Coach the Atletico Madrid Youth Team
Having been in charge of Atletico’s Under-19 side for the past three years, Torres has now been promoted to coach of the club’s B team after previous manager Luis Tevenet joined Diego Simeone’s senior staff.
“I feel at home and I feel a huge responsibility since I decided to face this new stage,” said Torres.
“I’ve been studying for three years.
“For me this step is very important and I want to have the ambition to do things better every day, facing the challenges that come and the responsibilities in the best way and at the same time knowing that I am not in a hurry and do not need to take any steps wrong.”
Torres’ ambitions
With Atletico’s B Team currently playing in Spain’s third tier, this will be the former striker’s first senior management role since retirement.
His job is to prepare his squad for the first team, and the former Spanish national team star is eager to continue their development.
“I accept it as a big challenge with a lot of ambition and peace of mind knowing that we are ready,” continued Torres.
“The first thing is to know what the aim of a youth team is, namely to contribute many players to the first team.
“We have to emphasize to the players that their dream is to play for Atletico Madrid and prepare them to enter the first team.”
Torres career
Torres began his career with Atletico before moving to Liverpool in 2007, where he became an Anfield hero after scoring 81 goals in 142 appearances for the Reds.
He made a surprise move to Chelsea in the January 2011 transfer window, and despite never reaching his best with the Blues, he won the FA Cup and Champions League while with the club.
After returning to Atletico, Torres ended his career in Japan with Sagan Tosu and will now take his first steps in the world of management.
