Former Real Madrid star Pepe has officially announced his retirement. He decided to hang up his boots at the age of 41.
As reported by 90 Min, Thursday (8/8/2024), Pepe, a former Real Madrid and Porto defender, has announced his retirement from football today. The veteran defender left Porto earlier this summer, before playing for Portugal at Euro 2024.
Pepe has a total of 141 caps for Portugal. His last appearance came when he played for Portugal against France in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024. Unfortunately, Portugal lost on penalties in that match with a score of 0-0 (3-5).
Pepe announced his decision to retire in a video uploaded to YouTube today. He also conveyed a touching message in the 33-minute video.
“I want to thank God for giving me the wisdom to be able to continue my journey. I cannot but thank all the presidents who bet on me and believed in me. All the employees of all the clubs I have played for, they are the soul and the essence. And also the national team. All my teammates and coaches, who helped me grow and compete every day. All the fans, who are the soul of football,” said Pepe.
“To Jorge Mendes, to Gestifute, to my mother, who was so important in my journey by letting me fly towards my dream, which was to be a professional footballer. To all my friends and family, especially my wife, who was my home when I was away,” he continued.
“My children for believing in me, for being the main support in my life, for supporting me when I left home to play. They were the support I needed to be able to leave with a clear conscience. I want to thank everyone, say a big thank you and hug me with great gratitude. Thank you very much,” said Pepe.
Pepe, who graduated from the Maritimo academy, then pursued a career at FC Porto. He then moved to Real Madrid in 2007 with a large transfer fee.
Then, Pepe spent 10 years at the Santiago Bernabeu. He played in 334 matches and won three La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues.
