Formula 1 Defends Stewards’ Decisions over Lando Norris’ Penalty During Austrian Grand Prix

McLaren driver Lando Norris on Sunday took two points off his super-license, on top of his five-second penalty, for pushing Red Bull driver Sergio Perez off the track at Turn 4 following a race restart at the Austrian Grand Prix.

This brings his total to ten penalty points over a twelve-month period, which means he’s only two points away from a ban race.

Meanwhile Norris refused to admit fault for a controversial incident with Perez at the Spielberg track that has him flirting with a rare F1 race ban for multiple penalties. However Formula 1 race director Michael Masi, defended the stewards’ decisions.

“They felt that with the cars completely level, Norris had to leave his opponent a space on the track as wide as the body of the car,” Masi said.

“It should also be noted that the penalty points system has been in place for a long time. We even discussed this issue with everybody at the end of last year and all teams agreed with the current system.” Masi added.

When asked about his current tally of penalties, Norris rightly argued that the penalties imposed on him by the stewards over the past twelve months were related to some rather light transgressions, such as the 3 points he was given.

“There should be decisions when someone has done something dangerous and puts someone in danger and does something they clearly shouldn’t have done, and then you have the race facts and the people must use common sense.” Norris said.

“Like the incident in Baku with the red flag when I did not return to the pit when I should have done so, I did not endanger anyone, in fact it was the opposite, and I have everything done safely.” he added.
