Erik ten Hag is hope to reunite with Frankie de Jong and is reportedly already working on trying to convince the Dutch midfielder to join him at Manchester United this summer, according to Spanish transfer specialist Gerard Romero.
United arrived on the market to try to sign De Jong after being alerted that Barcelona might need to transfer the former Ajax Amsterdam superstar to fund other summer deals. Despite this, the De Jong’s own intention is to remain at the Catalan team at least for the next season.
“Frenkie de Jong will be Erik ten Hag’s first signing at Manchester United.” Romero said.
“Nothing is done or agreed but talks begin with Manchester United as favourites because of Erik ten Hag and the club isn’t in the UEFA Champions League so they not a direct competitor to Barcelona.” he added.
De Jong has been at Barca since 2019 and has become a vital member of Xavi Hernandez’s side.
Despite his importance to the team, Barca director Mateu Alemany has not ruled out a transfer amid the club’s financial situation.
De Jong ended up opting for Barcelona, where he became the club’s absolute starter. So far, he has scored 13 goals, and 15 assists in 139 appearances.
Barcelona manager Xavi has also spoken out about his desire to keep the 25-year-old midfielder at Camp Nou for another season.
“I haven’t taklid with him about his future. He is playing at a very good level and has to continue here, he can be one of the best midfielder in the world for years to come.” Xavi said.
“If it were up to me, I would continue here for many more years. He is very important and can mark an era here. He has to score, assist and he has to be the protagonist.” Xavi added.
