Gennady “GG” Golovkin and Kamil Szeremeta hit the 160-pound weight limit on Thursday for their fight the next on Dec 18 at the Hard Rock Hotel in Florida.
The IBF middleweight champion put on a weight of 159.2 pounds on the scale. For his part, Szeremeta (21-0, 5 KOs), the No. 1 contender for the title, posted 159 pounds.
This will be the first defense of this newly won title by GGG in October 2019 as he defeated Sergiy Derevyanchenko.
In total, Golovkin (40-1-1, 35 KOs) will be making a 21st title defense which would be a record. Golovkin lost his middleweight belts following his setback by majority decision to the Mexican icon Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in 2018.
“It’s a great opportunity and a good fight. I’m very proud to reach this step and this record will play an important roll,” Gennady said.
“I’m just one step away from setting this record that has been standing for so many years. It’s just exciting. You’ll see the best version of Gennady Golovkin. Certainly.
“I do take this seriously, and I trained for this specifically. I do believe this will be a big drama show, and I’ve had a lot of time to get ready for that. You will see the best Gennady Golovkin on Friday.
“I want to thank the Szeremata team. Yhey are ready for a good fight and a good gala. I know we’ve had good preparation so maybe this will be the best show of the year. he added.
Gennady has seemed more weakened the day before at a press conference in its weight-cutting process. He seemed attacking during the weigh-in for this new challenge in front of him that some do not consider to be of very high level.
Meanhile, Szeremeta has talent, and punch a little. He’s stronger than his KO percentage would indicate, and he’s faster than Golovkin.
